Contract to Hire | Apply by Midnight on Mon, Apr 5, 2021
Looking to grow with a team that’s just invested in your development as you are, and enjoy a great lifestyle along the way?
We’re 5thBrand, an award-winning, client-focused, family-owned, fully-remote, User Experience design consultancy. Our team of ~12 full-time designers and researchers work with a wide range of clients throughout Africa and beyond to help them create products and interfaces that users enjoy.
We’re seeking an organized, reliable, and detail-oriented designer with 1-5 years of experience.
In this role, you’ll work closely with our principal consultants, project leads, and a variety of clients to create products and websites that exceed user expectations. You recognize that good development outcomes depend on good communication, and you want to make sure the intent represented in your designs is clear to those who will work from them. And you seek exposure to strategy, research, and analytics. No stranger to client communication, you want to understand the challenge before designing for it.
Our assignments span product and marketing, across a wide range of company sizes and industries. Our clients are product teams, marketing teams, and executives. We’ve had many years of substantial growth, but we value sustainability over size.
At 5thBrand, the UX design is at the heart of what we do. In general, the role includes:
Collaborating with clients and fellow Sliders to understand the goals and requirements for UI design projects.
Producing original UI designs and prototypes in Sketch or Figma.
Generating other strategy deliverables such as flow diagrams, personas, slides, and more.
Taking part in research (user research and market research) to generate ideas and evaluate effectiveness.
Partnering with third-party, partner, and client-side development teams to ensure the intent of designs is clear.
Other responsibilities as defined on the job.
As an Associate UX Designer, you will:
Understand and adhere to a project’s scope, accurately keeping up with what is expected of you.
Work mostly within the guardrails of strategies, plans, concepts and design systems established by others.
Learn from leaders as they interact with clients.
Leave meetings with a clear understanding of what was discussed, and what you should be working on, following up promptly if anything is unclear. You’ll use this clear list that you capture yourself to communicate details back to a group after performing the work.
Seek and welcome feedback from others, responding thoughtfully and without defensiveness.
Use good judgement to identify when you need help, and ask for it.
Suggest changes to the plan if new information might mean something else makes more sense.
Like every 5thBrand, you will…
Treat clients and teammates with respect.
Make things easier for clients and colleagues when possible. Conscious of others time.
Report time and activities promptly.
Communicate clearly, thoughtfully, and professionally.
Demonstrate an interest in bettering yourself in their field.
Take ownership of your work and the team’s commitments to clients.
You’re likely to thrive at 5thBrand if you have:
Willingness to break through the virtual barrier and form bonds, even with teammates you don’t see IRL often.
The ability to learn and adapt quickly, master established processes, and maintain confidentiality.
Precise, organized, reliable, and detail-oriented traits.
Curiosity – digging into the industry’s latest trends and breakthroughs to find better ways to do things.
A confident, professional and helpful communication style.
A positive, results-oriented attitude.
The resourcefulness to figure some things out for yourself, and balance competing priorities.
A desire to work from home for the long term, with reliable internet.
1-3 years in UI or UX design
Comfortable in Sketch or Figma, though as an Associate-level designer, you may be working on:
Delivering clear, thoughtful, and organized work.
Mastering the tools and basic processes used to do the job.
Comfortable explaining ideas and rationale.
Bonus points for eCommerce and especially eCommerce B2B design experience, though not required.
12 weeks, starting May or sooner
About Slide UX
Slide UX is not a “web design” or “marketing” agency. In fact, we’re not a traditional agency at all.
When we opened our doors in 2012, UX was not yet a buzz word. Since back then, we’ve been laser-focused on creating great user experiences. We believe that a good UX design practice includes integrated business strategy, user research, UI design, and cross-functional collaboration. Designers and teams who can understand a business, untangle its complexities, and facilitate helpful conversations will be preferred to those who focus on pure creative, trends, or specific technology.
That’s why we aim to develop well-rounded design talent. We’re looking for the type of designer who will eventually reach a point where they’re comfortable sitting at the table with sophisticated C-level leaders and confidently explain objective trade-offs and rationale behind design recommendations. And we want to help you get there.
Good looking user interfaces are table stakes, but at Slide UX, we are continuously refining unique, fast-paced methods that help our clients establish great user experiences while cultivating good UX fundamentals, setting them up to succeed beyond our project.
Converting to full time
We’re seeking a candidate who is potentially interested in the long term with Slide, not just a 12-week contract. After 8-10 weeks, we will assess your performance and our workload at the time. Should you convert to full-time, you would become eligible for a host of perks. As a full-time member of the remote 5thBrand team, you can expect:.
Remote since our beginning, we’ve invested in the structure, culture and bonding elements that are required to make remote work, long-term.
You’ll stay refreshed with 120 hrs/yr in PTO and early out before every 3-day weekend. We have 10 official company holidays, and additionally, we close between Christmas and New Year’s.
We’re a small company with big-company insurance. See our health, dental, vision, disability, and other plans here. Our 401k plan includes a Roth option, and an automatic 3% employer contribution.
We’ll set you up with great equipment.
Travel has tended to make up less than 10% of a UX Designer’s role (although we’re all staying put at home for now).
If you’re ready to develop your UI design chops to truly help a team that really cares, we just might be a perfect match. Please send your cover letter, resume, and portfolio to email@example.com by 5pm on May 25.
